C.A.R. SUPPORTS TWO PROPOSITIONS, REMINDS REALTORS® TO VOTE NOV. 2 Earlier this month, C.A.R.'s board of directors adopted a "for" position on two statewide ballot propositions -- Propositions 1A and 64 -- acknowledging their relationship to real estate. State IMPAC Trustees also approved monetary contributions to support both campaigns. C.A.R. supports Proposition 1A, the historic bipartisan agreement between local governments and the Governor to prevent the State Legislature from raiding local government funds after 2006. This measure is strongly supported by a diverse coalition of groups. The State IMPAC Trustees approved a $50,000 contribution to support the Yes on Proposition 1A campaign. For more information, go to http://www.yesonprop1a.com. C.A.R. also supports Proposition 64, the measure to stop shakedown lawsuits and require attorneys to actually have a client who has been harmed before suing small businesses. The State IMPAC Trustees approved an additional $30,000 to Californians to Stop Shakedown Lawsuits, bringing the total contributions to this campaign to more than $230,000. For more information, go to http://www.stopshakedownlawsuits.com. C.A.R. found the remaining state ballot propositions to be "not real estate-related," with the exception of Proposition 65 (local government finance), on which C.A.R. took a "neutral" position. REALTORS® are encouraged to vote on Nov. 2.

GOOD NEIGHBOR AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
California REALTOR® Diane Mintz of Marvin Gardens Real Estate in Berkeley has been named one of REALTOR® Magazine's 2004 Good Neighbor Award winners. Now in its fifth year, the Good Neighbor Awards recognize REALTORS® who make extraordinary commitments to improving the quality of life in their communities. Mintz is one of five REALTORS® to receive this year's award. She is being recognized for her work with inner-city kids, which began when she tutored in Richmond. As she got to know the children and learned how few had been outside the neighborhood, much less to the theater or a museum, Mintz knew she had to do something. In 2000, she founded Youth Enrichment Strategies, an organization that has sent more than 1,000 inner-city kids to summer camp. Mintz also developed a weekend family camp to teach camping skills as well as leadership and conflict resolution skills to children and their families. The five winners of the Good Neighbor Award each will receive a $7,500 grant for their community cause, a lead crystal Good Neighbor Award Trophy, and the right to use the Good Neighbor Awards logo on their Web site and promotional materials. Additionally, the recipients will travel to the NAR Conference & Expo in Orlando, where they will receive their awards during the general session on Nov. 6 in front of 6,000 NAR members.

NUMBER OF HOMEOWNERS IN U.S. REACHES ALL-TIME HIGH According to a report released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Monday, the United States now has 73.8 million homeowners -- a historical high. This is approximately 1.6 million more homeowners than recorded one year ago. The Census also reported the rate of homeownership increased 0.6 percent to 69 percent in the third quarter of 2004 compared with the same period one year ago but remained unchanged from second quarter 2004. During the third quarter of 2004, homeownership rates by region were highest in the Midwest and South, at 73.8 percent and 71.0 percent, respectively. The Northeast recorded a homeownership rate of 64.4 percent, while the West experienced a similar rate of 64.7 percent. The Census also reported an all-time high of 15.2 million minority homeowners, though the homeownership rate among minorities continues to be lower than that of non-Hispanic whites. In addition to the 73.8 million housing units occupied by homeowners, there were 33.1 million housing units occupied by renters during third quarter 2004. "These numbers combined with news that sales of previously owned homes jumped 3.1 percent in September, show that housing continues to lead the way in our rapidly recovering economy," said Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson.
